The Fatal Four That Isn't

Dave Webb

Drink/drugs. Phones. Seatbelts & 'Speeding'

Fatal 4 appears to have been conceived by Leicestershire Fire & Rescue and promoted by its Chief Officer Dave Webb. See their Web Site here

IHere ,on their About Page, they relate a tragic story of a fatal accident in which they use the term 'Excessive Speed' Quote: 'In the early hours of 22 October 2011 on the B4114 at Croft in Leicestershire, a young driver, Michael York, returning home from a night out in Leicester crashed his vehicle into a tree whilst driving at excessive speed and under the influence of drink and drugs.'

There is no such legal state of 'excessive speed' See So, on the basis of a term that doesn't legally exist, 'speeding', that causes nothing, is in the Fatal 4. The three legal states of speed on the road are 'Speeding' to exceed an abitrary number on a pole, dangerous driving and careless driving. No other, non legal, confusing terms are required. The sad tale doesn't even explain what was meant by 'excessive speed'. In this case it was clearly dangerous driving, possibly as an effect of drinking.

We have tried to contact Mr Webb, for answers as to how 'speeding' actually causes anything, and why dangerous or careless driving are not in a Fatal 5? So far, he hasn't been interested enough in genuine road safety to respond.

We do link this to a complaint against N.Yorks Police for using bereaved to promote false road safety too and also using non legal terms to do so See

We are totally shocked that any fire chief would interfere in matters outside his qualifications. In doing so, he has played right into the hands of the Speeding Industry and is endangering us all because dangerous and careless driving are ignored by the Fatal Four. Is he man enough to correct all this? So far apparently not.
